Some Questions about GOD
- WHAT ABOUT CALLING GOD HE?
The English language is wonderful, but doesn't have an adequate pronoun for God, Almighty, Omnipotent, Everlasting, Holy, Pure and Perfect.
Some Friends call God Father and He while others are more comfortable calling God Mother and She. But God is neither male nor female. God is spirit, invisible and radically different from us. We diminish Him (Her) when we create God in our own image, instead of being created in His (Her). God is Creator, Living, Life, not a tiny, inadequate God too much like ourselves.
God wants genuine equality for men and women. They work together as helpmeets in marriage.
- WHO MADE GOD AND WHERE DID HE COME FROM?
When Moses asks God who He is, in the King James version of the Bible God says, "I am that I am." In the Septuagint version God says, "I am he who is." In one of his Narnia tales C. S. Lewis translates this phrase as, "I am myself." All three of these would seem to mean that no one created God, God just is. God doesn't have any before. God has no beginning and will have no end. There was no time before God. God invented time.
ADAM AND EVE AND EVOLUTION
- HOW DID GOD CREATE THE WORLD?
The story of Adam and Eve and the current ideas about evolution are two different ways of looking at our origin. Adam and Eve are the explanation for why life can be so difficult at times. Why humans have to work so hard. Why we get sick. Eve, by the way, is not a woman's name. It means life in Hebrew. (But that is beside the point for many people perceive of it as the name of the principal sinner.) Adam and Eve are seen as two people who sin and cause a lot of trouble for the rest of us.
Evolution, on the other hand, as taught in many places and in popular books, often sees people as rather bright chimps, with five fingers with flat nails instead of claws. Evolution as taught this way sees us as animals without souls.
An enormous amount of evidence exists that part of God's plan for the world is based on the evolution of life forms. Evolution is the way God chose to have us develop and grow physically. But what about us? Are we just chimpanzees with large brains? Do we have an animal nature? An animal nature which explains and justifies all the bad things we do? No! We are not animals in an evolutionary chain, but like God. The important thing about us is not our opposable thumb but our souls which have the "power of an endless life."
There are only two questions to answer in this life. Do I choose God and Life? Or do I choose no God and death?
We can believe that God created the World in a few days or over a long period of time. We can believe what we want to about this. We can teach our children our beliefs about Gods creations. The government and the courts have no right to tell us what to believe.
