CHRIST IS THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD
CHRIST THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD
George Fox’s letter Christ is the Light of The World, was written in 1654 and can be found at the end of Canby Jones’ edition of the pastoral letters – after letter 420. Dr. Jones writes: In my judgment this is one of Fox’s most beautiful and inspiring letters and ranks with the best of those which were printed in the 1698 edition of Fox’s Epistles. The most moving paragraphs in it are those which deal with the multiple ways in which we can experience the presence of God and Christ within.
GOD AND CHRIST ARE NEAR
Lord God Almighty and His Son walk in our midst and delights to do us good.
CHRIST THE LIGHT IS WITHIN
Christ is the Light of the world and enlightens every person who comes into the world.
Christ the Light shines in darkness.
Christ the Light is the Way, Truth, and Life.
He is the way to the Father.
He quickens us, gives us life.
If we wait, stand still in Him, we will receive Him; He will discover sin and evil in us and deliver us from temptation.
In Him we shall have power, joy, and comfort.
He is in our conscience, shows us our sins.
Christ the Light is our Teacher within.
RESURRECTED CHRIST
Early Friends believed that the Light Christ, who lived within them, was the glorious Resurrected Christ, the Day dawning, the Day Star arising within. Day dawning, Day Star arises within . . . I Peter 1:19; Revelation 22:16
Fox has a very intimate and personal relationship with the Christ the Light. He experiences the presence of God and Christ within in many ways. Of course, he thinks that we can do this too.
